Lawn and garden

Salt Lake County and Tooele County

Zones 5b to 7b; most cities fall in 7a and 7b.

The Salt Lake Valley is where the milder end of the northern Utah range lives. Most of the valley floor sits in zones 7a and 7b by the 2023 USDA data, with the benches and the Oquirrh and Wasatch foothills dropping to 6a and 6b. The airport station's average last spring frost is April 26, and USU lists Midvale at May 13 and the West Jordan Conservation Garden at May 10, so a few miles and a few feet of elevation can move planting by weeks.[1]

Tooele, across the Oquirrhs, is a good reminder: USU puts its average last frost at May 7 and its first fall frost at October 14, for 159 frost-free days.[2]

Zone by city

Zones come from the 2023 USDA map data matched to each city's nearest ZIP codes. A range means the ZIP codes around the city disagree; your own yard may differ, so check your address on the USDA map. Tap a city for its page.
