Ordinance 2024-8: prohibit painting or covering exterior brick in more East Central District zones

    Approved · 5-2

The ordinance extends the existing ban on painting exterior brick in East Central residential zones to the NC, PI, R-4, R-MFV, R-MFH, C-MU and R-9 zones, with an exemption process; the Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend it. Staff said it does not stop repainting already-painted brick or painting cinderblock. Speakers split: some supported it to protect old brick; others asked for grandfathering or case-by-case review. Council Member Blair said he supports preservation but also property rights and would vote no; Council Member Choberka suggested a painting permit instead and wanted more community education. Council Member Hyer noted owners can seek approval to paint or seal unsealed brick.

Moved by Council Member Shaun Myers, seconded by Council Member Marcia White. Vote: 5-2; Council Members Bart Blair and Angela Choberka voted no
