Repeal of plastic bag ban, Ordinance 21-23

    Approved · 3-2

Environmental Director Issa Hamud asked the council to repeal the disposable plastic bag prohibition set to start January 1, 2022, citing its effect on low-income families, the pandemic and difficulty of implementation, in favor of a countywide program. Council Member Amy Anderson wanted repeal or a deadline extension and favored fees to change behavior; López wanted the County's official position first; Chair Mark Anderson said the County had not yet decided. A first motion by Jensen failed for lack of a second. A second motion by Jensen, seconded by Mark Anderson, repealed chapter 8.36 on a 3-2 roll call. A student, Lacey, urged the council to keep the ban, citing microplastics research.
