  6. Item 10 · Public hearing

Second public hearing on creating a new school district

    Discussed

Mayor Johnson said this was the second required hearing on the study for a new school district. Eight speakers, including two Saratoga Springs residents, spoke, mostly in support of the interlocal agreement or a ballot vote. Mayor Johnson said he had not wanted to get involved but changed course after the last school bond election failed, and said voters make the final decision. Council Member Hancock said the split would improve local control and representation and the new districts would still be among the state's largest. Council Member Newall cited finances, saying the central configuration would mean smaller tax increases than staying in Alpine School District, and noted a $21 million annual deficit in the southern part of the district projected to reach $31 million in five years. Council Member Albrecht, a former special education teacher in the district, supported a ballot vote and personally favored a central district. Council Member Stallings stressed hearing all perspectives; Council Member Condie's support was noted from the earlier hearing. No vote was taken.

Steve Brown raised concerns about aesthetics, safety and construction at Holbrook Farms Park. At the school district hearing, eight speakers (Julie King, Mac Sims, John Madsen, Joylynn Lincoln, Emily Lockhart, Steve Brown, Stacy Bateman and Lisa Cook) mostly favored the interlocal agreement or putting the split on the ballot; Lisa Cook favored a split but was unsure the proposed boundary was best and worried west Lehi might not get needed funding, and Emily Lockhart urged consideration of all Alpine students.
