At a work session that included a tour of the glass recycling facility, Power Director Joel Eves recommended expanding the city's power plant with three 2.4 MW units and two 3.89 MW units at a cost of around $19 million. He said the city needs an air permit first and then council approval of a contract. Council Members Chris Condie and Katie Koivisto were excused.

    Power plant expansion

    Discussed

Joel Eves said worsening heat, gas price volatility and rising demand drive the need, and expanding could bring savings and more diverse resources. He said the city should not keep buying contracted five-year products and should plan for long-term sustainability. He recommended adding three 2.4 MW units and two 3.89 MW units. The city must first obtain an air permit, and the council would then need to approve the contract. Federal regulations apply, an added generator technician would be needed, and the building will not change because the expansion was planned for. He wants to start as soon as possible; cost is around $19 million.
