Alpine School District tells council it will seek a bond in 2022, voices doubts about redevelopment areas

Alpine School District leaders told the American Fork City Council the district plans to go to voters for a bond in 2022 and is moving Polaris and Summit high schools into the former Walmart building. Board members said many on the school board dislike redevelopment and community reinvestment areas because property tax is the district's only revenue from growth, as the city seeks a partnership to fix 200 South.

Board members reported about 7,700 American Fork students, a 95% graduation rate and labor shortages (20-30 bus drivers short, substitute fill rate 60-80%). Polaris and Summit alternative high schools (about 200 students) will move into the leased former Walmart building at semester. The district plans a bond in 2022 and is refinancing bonds to keep tax rates flat. Board member Amber Bonner said RDAs are hard for the district because it collects no impact fees. Councilmembers Shelton and Taylor said 200 South is a top priority needing a district partnership; the district said a CRA draft could take 60-90 days after board review. Traffic near 620 South and school drop-off congestion after Caveman Boulevard work were also raised.
