Hurricane City Campus (new city hall and police station)

Hurricane plans a new city hall and a new police station, which the city calls its City Campus. On Oct. 1 the council, sitting as the Municipal Building Authority, voted unanimously to authorize lease revenue bonds of not more than $27 million for the project, and the council then approved the lease and ground-lease documents. The amount is a cap: City Manager Kaden DeMille said he expects the project to cost less, that the city has about $17 million saved plus proceeds from selling the current police station, and that he expects to put about half down. He said the city will not raise taxes for it. He gave costs of $494 a square foot for city hall and $451 for the police station, with a 9% contractor contingency and an additional 8% city contingency. The Planning Commission approved the preliminary site plan, and groundwork on the police station could begin around November. Two public hearings on the financing are planned for the first November meeting. The current city hall would be remodeled for the court.
