La Verkin at a glance Washington County · Utah
La Verkin lies on the north bank of the Virgin River, across from Hurricane to the south and next to Toquerville to the north. The city's own description places it in the middle of what it calls the Grand Circle: Zion National Park is about 20 miles away, Bryce Canyon about 106 miles and the Grand Canyon about 125 miles. It also describes the Pah Tempe hot mineral springs in Timpoweap Canyon, just south of the community, as a place early settlers and local Native Americans used for healing and rest. That page, written around 2018, says the springs were then closed while Washington County, La Verkin, Hurricane and the water conservancy district studied reopening them, so check the current status before assuming access.
For a short outing on foot, the city's trails page describes the La Verkin Overlook Trail: a trailhead near 400 South and 100 West with a small gravel lot, a route of about 1.1 miles one way that climbs the face and follows a ridge to the monument view area. The monument can also be reached by passenger vehicle from Highway 9 on a dirt and gravel road of about 1.5 miles. The city's events pages list annual traditions including Peach Days, Fourth of July, 24th of July, Water Days, Winterfest and Wreaths Across America, and a Historical Committee works to identify, preserve and promote the city's heritage.
