Shared housing zoning text amendments (formerly single room occupancy)

The Council adopted Ordinance 66 of 2022, which replaces the single-room-occupancy category in Title 21A with 'shared housing': buildings with smaller units of one or more sleeping rooms that may have a private kitchen or a private bathroom, but not both (Petition PLNPCM2018-00066). The revised proposal lets a unit hold multiple sleeping rooms. Council Member Fowler said lowering the maximum occupancy of units sharing bathrooms or kitchens answered constituent concerns and added a dignified, affordable option. Council Member Wharton said concerns heard from residents improved the ordinance and hoped it was a compromise.
