Roosevelt at a glance Duchesne County · Utah
Roosevelt is in Duchesne County in the Uintah Basin, an area that was part of the Ute reservation until the federal government opened it to homesteading in 1905. The neighboring town of Duchesne was first called Dora and briefly Theodore, and was renamed so its mail would not be confused with Roosevelt's. The county's economy has centered on farming and the oil industry.
The city website runs an Agenda Center for the City Council, Planning and Zoning, Parks and Recreation, Economic Development and the Airport Board, with search, RSS feeds and notification sign-ups. The home page links to utility bill payment, the fee schedule, the municipal code and the Aquatic Center, which has indoor and outdoor pools. Subscribe to the notification feed for the board whose items you follow, then read the minutes once they post.
The Utah State Historical Society says the Uinta Basin reservation shrank from nearly 4 million acres in 1882 to about 360,000 acres by 1909, as land was allotted to tribal members, set aside for the Uinta National Forest and Strawberry Reservoir, and opened to homesteaders, who received 160 acres each. The Utah Legislature created Duchesne County in 1914 from part of Wasatch County, and Duchesne won the county seat in a contested vote against Roosevelt and Myton. The county covers 3,255 square miles, with the Uinta Mountains, including 13,528-foot King's Peak, to the north and the dry Uinta Basin to the south.
