Politically neutral. Every candidate on this ballot gets the same sections. The party shown is the one the ballot lists. A section is missing only where we haven't yet found an official source for it. How we stay neutral
Mike Smith began his law-enforcement career with the Pleasant Grove Police Department. The Utah Sheriffs’ Association describes assignments in patrol, traffic, investigations and internal affairs, along with work on a joint apprehension team involving the U.S. Marshals Service. His education includes criminal-justice and emergency-management studies and graduation from the FBI National Academy, adding formal leadership training to his operational experience. [2]
Police chief and county sheriff
Smith served eighteen years on the Utah County Metro SWAT Team, including leadership and operational-command roles. He became Pleasant Grove police chief in 2012 and Utah County sheriff in 2018. His county profile and professional association biography identify community involvement, collaboration and constitutional rights as interests. He now leads county law-enforcement and corrections operations after earlier municipal and multiagency service. [1] [2]
Corrections programs described by his campaign
Smith’s campaign highlights rehabilitation and practical skills within the jail. It describes the RISE program, culinary training and a dog-training initiative, along with a 2025 partnership on suicide-prevention education for incarcerated people. These are campaign descriptions of his administration’s programs, linking the sheriff’s corrections responsibilities to preparation for life after custody and support while people are incarcerated. [3]
Training and public-safety priorities
The campaign also identifies training in de-escalation, autism awareness, arrest control and response to critical incidents. It highlights a Teachers Academy intended to prepare school staff for emergencies and describes collaboration across public-safety agencies. Those stated priorities build on the municipal-command, tactical and emergency-management experience documented by the county and the Utah Sheriffs’ Association. [3]
