Mike Kennedy grew up in Michigan in a household with six siblings. He earned a bachelor’s degree at Brigham Young University, studied medicine at Michigan State University and became a family physician. He later earned a law degree at BYU. His congressional biography says he pursued legal training to strengthen his ability to advocate for patients. [1] [3]
Utah legislature to Congress
Kennedy served in the Utah House from 2013 to 2019 and in the Utah Senate from 2021 to 2025 before moving to Congress. He maintained a family-medicine practice during his state legislative service. He entered the U.S. House in January 2025. His official biography identifies fiscal restraint, border security and limiting federal overreach among his congressional priorities. [1] [3]
Land and scientific research
The House Clerk lists Kennedy on Natural Resources and Science, Space, and Technology. His Natural Resources assignments include Federal Lands and Indian and Insular Affairs. On the science committee, he serves on Research and Technology and on Space and Aeronautics. The assignments span public land policy, tribal and territorial affairs, federal research and space programs. [2]
Infrastructure responsibilities
Kennedy also serves on Transportation and Infrastructure. His subcommittee assignments cover highways and transit; railroads, pipelines and hazardous materials; and economic development, public buildings and emergency management. Together, these responsibilities extend his congressional portfolio beyond health and medicine to transportation systems, federal facilities and preparedness. Congressman Mike Kennedy is serving his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Before Congress, he spent ten years in Utah’s State Legislature, representing communities across Utah County and earning a reputation as a principled conservative willing to tackle tough issues, have thoughtful conversations, and stand up for Utah families.
Dr. Kennedy practiced family medicine in Utah County for more than two decades. Early in his medical career, after seeing firsthand how complicated laws and regulations affected patients and doctors, he attended law school part-time and earned his law degree while continuing to practice medicine full-time. Mike also spent years volunteering his time to provide free medical care to uninsured families.
In Utah’s Legislature, Kennedy built a record protecting life, defending constitutional freedoms, delivering tax relief, reducing unnecessary regulations, and expanding opportunities for families and small businesses.
In Congress, Kennedy is focused on lowering costs, restoring fiscal discipline, keeping America safe, strengthening American energy production to lower costs, and defending the freedoms that make Utah strong and America great.
Mike and his wife, Katrina, have been married for more than 30 years. They live in Utah County and are the proud parents of eight children and twelve grandchildren.
Democrat Jonny Larsen, Libertarian Taylor Wright and unaffiliated candidate Steven Burt answered questions on affordability and water, and Republican Rep. Mike Kennedy did not respond.
