The Bureau of Reclamation built Echo Dam and Reservoir in the 1930s to supply farm irrigation. In the late 1960s, residents of nearby Coalville began running recreation concessions on the water, and it later became a state park.

The park sits just off Interstate 80 and offers a beach, boat launch and docks, rentals, hiking and biking, with fishing in summer and ice fishing in winter. Camping options include full and partial hookup sites, tent pads, primitive sites, hammock sites and a cottage.

Echo Canyon, just east, was a pioneer and California Trail route, and the Weber River below the dam is known for fishing.
