Pfeifferhorn
A glacier-carved horn south of Little Cottonwood Canyon, once called Little Matterhorn.
Pfeifferhorn is the pointed summit on the Salt Lake–Utah county line south of Little Cottonwood Canyon, inside Lone Peak Wilderness. A Forest Service map labels it by its older name, Little Matterhorn, at 11,326 feet.
The Utah Historical Society says local climbers named it for Chick Pfeiffer, and the Wasatch Mountain Club promoted the name after his death in 1939. The U.S. Board on Geographic Names made Pfeifferhorn official in 2013. The Utah Geological Survey describes glaciers in Maybird Gulch and Hogum Fork carving the horn and its narrow ridge.
The common approach passes Red Pine Lake, but the summit involves exposed scrambling beyond the lake trail. Little Cottonwood Canyon is a protected watershed: dogs and swimming are not allowed.
