American Fork Canyon
The canyon behind American Fork, with Timpanogos Cave, Tibble Fork, campgrounds and the north end of the Alpine Loop.
American Fork Canyon leads from the north end of Utah Valley into the Wasatch. SR-92 runs up the canyon and over the Alpine Loop to Provo Canyon, and SR-144 branches off to Tibble Fork. The canyon is the setting for Timpanogos Cave National Monument and for the Timpooneke trailhead, one of the two main routes up Mount Timpanogos, in the South Fork.
The canyon is in the Pleasant Grove Ranger District of the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. UDOT notes that you need a fee or pass to stop at any trailhead or recreation site except Timpanogos Cave and Sundance; driving through without parking needs none. On summer weekends and holidays, Timpooneke parking uses timed tickets on Recreation.gov.
Conditions on the upper Alpine Loop are not the same as in the lower canyon. Check UDOT before planning a drive over the top, and treat the lower canyon and the loop as separate trips.
