Spiral Jetty

Robert Smithson's 1970 earthwork of basalt rock coiling into Great Salt Lake, cared for by Dia Art Foundation.

Robert Smithson built Spiral Jetty in April 1970 on the Rozel Point peninsula, on the northeastern shore of Great Salt Lake. The coil is about 1,500 feet long and 15 feet wide, made of black basalt rock and earth from the site. It belongs to Dia Art Foundation.

The lake level changes how the work looks: it can be underwater, or far from the water's edge. The site is remote, far from services.
