Bonneville Salt Flats
A white salt crust west of Salt Lake City, left by ancient Lake Bonneville and known for land-speed racing.
West of Salt Lake City near Wendover, a broad white salt crust runs to the horizon. The Bureau of Land Management, which manages the flats, describes them as a remnant of ancient Lake Bonneville. They are also known for land-speed racing.
The surface is fragile. A dry-looking edge does not mean it is safe to drive, water can change the flats quickly, and permitted events can close parts of them to general use. The BLM posts event closures and driving restrictions.
Before you go
Stay off wet salt, follow posted restrictions and check the BLM page for event closures before driving out.
