Enterprise at a glance Washington County · Utah
Enterprise began as a water project. Latter-day Saint settlers grazed stock along Shoal Creek in the 1860s, and Erastus Snow organized 75 settlers at a settlement he named Hebron in 1868. At about 5,400 feet, with limited water, the community centered on ranching rather than farming. Hebron resident Orson Huntsman proposed a dam and canal system to bring year-round water, which would have left Hebron outside the new supply. He filed a desert claim in 1891 and named the area Enterprise.
The Utah State Historical Society says an earthquake in 1902 damaged most stone homes in the area and changed most residents' minds, and the remaining residents moved to Enterprise that year. Hebron is now a ghost town, and the Enterprise Reservoir has supplied water since then. The article describes Enterprise as small but much larger than Hebron ever was, known for nearby recreation and an annual August corn fest. The city's website lists building and zoning, burn permits, business license information, public notices and utility bill pay.
