Building codes and construction

Thomas W. Peterson's House biography describes work as a state building official, operation of an electrical-contracting business and a general-contracting business building homes for Habitat for Humanity. It records leadership of the Uniform Building Code Commission and board service with the International Code Council. His education record names Ogden-Weber Technical College, placing technical training alongside construction and building-code administration in his background. [1]

Box Elder and Cache counties

Peterson began House service in September 2022 and represents District 1, covering portions of Box Elder and Cache counties. His current standing assignments include Business, Labor, and Commerce and Public Utilities and Energy. Those responsibilities connect the regulation of commercial activity and utility systems with a district constituency in northern Utah, alongside the economic-development, water-planning and resource-policy responsibilities listed in his current committee record. [1]

Residential asbestos testing

Peterson sponsored 2026 HB582, Asbestos Amendments. The introduced text proposed changes to asbestos-testing requirements for residential property within the air-quality board's statutory authority. That subject connects building work with environmental regulation and the procedures that apply when residential structures are altered. The proposal amended a section dealing with the air-quality board's powers and residential testing requirements. This account concerns the introduced version of the bill. [2]

In the 2026 General Session, Thomas W. Peterson was chief sponsor of H.B. 40, Utah Construction Trades Licensing Act Amendments. The bill rearranges the state's construction-trades licensing law: alarm companies and their agents move into a chapter of their own, and the licensing rules for the remaining trades are reorganized. The governor signed it on March 17, 2026. [3]

In the 2026 General Session, Thomas W. Peterson was chief sponsor of H.B. 41, Construction and Fire Codes Amendments. It updates the state construction code to adopt revised wildland-urban interface standards and delays the annual fee a county charges owners of high-risk wildland-urban interface property. The governor signed it on March 25, 2026. [4]

Economic development and water planning

His roster also lists Economic and Community Development Appropriations, the Legislative Water Development Commission and interim work in natural resources and public utilities, energy and technology. Those assignments add program spending and water planning to his construction and utility-related portfolio. They offer a broader view of his public duties than the single building-materials proposal, extending into economic development and infrastructure policy. [1]
