Teaching, business and leadership studies

Matt Hymas grew up in West Valley City and studied mathematics teaching at the University of Utah. He later earned an MBA from the University of Phoenix and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Central Michigan University. His professional background combines classroom subject preparation, business training and school leadership, each described in his official state board biography. [1]

School career and board election

Hymas has worked in education since 2008. His positions have included teacher, coach, athletic director, junior-high director, assistant secondary director and high-school director. He was reelected to a second term on the Utah State Board of Education in 2024 and represents Tooele County. His school career includes responsibility for both instruction and the operation of secondary-school programs. [1]

Educational choice and family needs

Hymas’s official biography describes support for different forms of education and families’ ability to choose the setting that fits them. He connects classroom experience to understanding students, parents and teachers, and administrative experience to the needs of families and communities. That statement outlines his approach to school policy and his reasons for bringing both perspectives to state board deliberations. [1]

Hymas serves on the state board’s Finance Committee. [2]

Current school leadership

Hymas’s 2026 disclosure identifies his employment as executive director of Excelsior Academy, corroborating the position listed on his official biography. The role adds an ongoing school-management responsibility to his statewide board service. His earlier progression through teaching, athletics and secondary-school leadership provides the professional context for that executive position. [3]
