Background
Kacey Bates became Summit County Sheriff when the Summit County Council unanimously appointed her on Oct. 8, 2025, after Sheriff Frank Smith retired in early September; she is the first woman to serve as sheriff in the county and the second in Utah. KPCW reports she joined the Summit County Sheriff's Office in 1997 as a corrections officer and rose to jail commander, and also served as a detective and school resource officer. She graduated from Weber State University. She said she planned to add a mental health unit to the county jail. KPCW reported in January 2026 that Kacey Bates was appointed Summit County sheriff in 2025 after a career in the sheriff's office, and that she had filed to run for the office in the 2026 election. The county's sheriff message is signed by her as sheriff.
