Mount Ellen

The high point of the Henry Mountains, a classic site for how mountains form from below.

Mount Ellen is the high point of the Henry Mountains in Garfield County. The Utah Geological Survey and BLM give 11,522 feet; other federal pages use different figures. The surrounding wilderness study area reaches into Wayne County.

The Henrys formed when magma pushed into sedimentary layers and domed them upward, then erosion exposed the hardened cores. BLM describes Mount Ellen as the range's largest dome, about 12 to 15 miles across, and geologist G. K. Gilbert's 19th-century work made the range a classic place to study these structures. A 1953 USGS study records that the peak was named for the wife of A. H. Thompson of the Powell Survey. Its slopes are summer range for the Henry Mountains' free-roaming bison.
