September 23, 2026, 6:30 p.m. · 220 East Morris Avenue, South Salt Lake

At its Sept. 23 work meeting the South Salt Lake council heard Salt Lake County Council at-large members Suzanne Harrison and Natalie Pinkney describe the county's budget and regional services. They said about 73 percent of the county general fund goes to criminal justice and public safety, that the county's actual operating budget is $1.5 billion with $500 million in pass-through dollars, and that the county will be entirely incorporated cities apart from the canyons by mid-summer 2027. Council members asked about the free youth recreation pass, the closure of the county justice court and a South Salt Lake recreation center. No votes were taken. These are draft minutes.

    Discussed

Harrison and Pinkney described county regional services including the jail (nearly $120 million to run), elections, the health department and senior services, and said tourism-funded venues such as the Salt Palace lower the tax burden per household by over $1,700 a year. They backed the upcoming county recreation bond. Council Member Williams asked about the end of the county justice court; Harrison said cases from unincorporated areas would go to district court at no added cost to the city. Chair Bynum and Williams asked for a recreation center in the city.
