Re-canvass of the 2021 general election after the mayoral recount (Resolution 21-461)
Approved · 6-1
City Recorder Wendy Downs presented the results as recounted by Salt Lake County on Nov. 17. Speakers included Tane Wanlass, Zachary Frankel, Brent Allsup, who disagreed with the recount process, Kathy Walker, Maddi Stufflebeam, Steve Van Maren, Terri Hrechkosy, who praised the county clerk's administration of the election, and Jim Edwards, who thanked the city recorder's office; most congratulated Council Member Monica Zoltanski. Council Member Cyndi Sharkey raised concerns about the recount process, and City Attorney Lynn Pace and Council Attorney Tracy Cowdell responded. Sharkey moved, seconded by Council Member Marci Houseman, to decline approval because a full recount was not conducted and to request a more complete recount. That motion failed 2-4-1, with Sharkey and Houseman voting yes, Council Members Zach Robinson, Brooke Christensen, Alison Stroud and Kris Coleman-Nicholl voting no, and Zoltanski abstaining. A motion by Robinson, seconded by Stroud, to accept and certify the mayoral results failed 3-3-1, with Robinson, Stroud and Christensen yes, Coleman-Nicholl, Sharkey and Houseman no, and Zoltanski abstaining. After a pause on reconsideration, Stroud moved to reconsider, seconded by Christensen, and it passed 7-0. The revised Sharkey motion, which also asked the county to expedite the recount, passed 6-1, with Robinson voting no.
