Mixed-Use zoning consolidation text and map amendment (public hearing)
Continued · 7-0
The Council held a continued public hearing on consolidating up to 27 commercial, form-based and mixed-use districts into six MU districts (Petition PLNPCM2024-00707). Of 11 speakers, eight opposed or asked for changes: concerns included traffic and safety, effects on existing businesses, height allowances, parking for businesses and customers, a request to keep MU-1 zoning, and regulations near historic landmarks. Two speakers supported it, citing updated setbacks and letting workers live closer to jobs; another said current variance and rear-yard setback processes produce unequal outcomes. The Council closed the hearing and deferred action.

General comment: one speaker objected to the combined city and state sales tax increase and asked for disclosure of gifts to Council members from a hockey team and its owner; another raised protecting the community from predators; a speaker said developers seek zoning islands and variances and that design review should not circumvent existing code; and an off-duty emergency medic said personal medical equipment used at the June 14 protest incident was taken by police as evidence and not replaced, asking for replacement. Council Member Wharton thanked the medics and said Council staff would follow up.
