Firefighting, Sandy City Council and health care

Zach Robinson is the Democratic nominee for Salt Lake County Council At-Large A. The Salt Lake Tribune describes him as a former firefighter and paramedic who works in virtual care at University of Utah Health, and says his campaign website lists two terms on the Sandy City Council. The Tribune's biography note on his commentary adds that he ran for Salt Lake County Council District 6 in 2024. [1] [2]

In that commentary, Robinson writes that his firefighting career ended after a back injury suffered during a rescue. He credits himself with passing Sandy's anti-idling ordinance, pressing for funding to rebuild a Sandy recreation center used for preschool and childcare, and pushing for pay, benefits and safe conditions for city employees. These are his own descriptions of his record. [2]

How he became the nominee

The Salt Lake County Democratic Party's published convention results show Robinson receiving 537 votes, or 57 percent, to Nate Salazar's 403, or 43 percent, for the at-large seat. The party's page does not give the convention date. [3]

What he told voters in October 2026

In the Tribune's October 12 questionnaire, Robinson named affordability as the top issue he hears about and said he would increase funding for low-income housing, add incentives for affordable housing and expand first-time homebuyer programs. His stated top priority is lowering the cost of living for county families, including housing, childcare and senior services. [1]

He said he would push for water conservation tied to new development and protection of the Great Salt Lake, opposed recent state data-center proposals while backing guardrails such as water and energy use disclosure, and said the county should not cooperate with federal immigration enforcement beyond what the law requires. He also pledged to accept election results. These are campaign statements, not votes on the county council. [1]

The seat and the race

The Salt Lake County Council has nine members: three at-large members elected countywide to six-year terms and six district members elected to four-year terms. The council enacts county ordinances, adopts the annual budget and approves many intergovernmental agreements. [4]

The Tribune's October 12 voter guide listed Republican Kathleen Anderson, Robinson and Constitution Party candidate Gregory Beglarian for the seat, and reported that Anderson defeated incumbent Laurie Stringham at the April county Republican convention. The council currently has five Republicans and four Democrats, so the Tribune says control is at stake. The county clerk's candidate list is the official source for the full ballot. [1] [5]
