Background
Kent Davis is the Republican candidate for Salt Lake County District Attorney on the Nov. 3, 2026 ballot, challenging incumbent Sim Gill, who was first elected in 2010. The Salt Lake Tribune describes Davis as a combat veteran who works as corporate counsel and director of cybersecurity at a commercial real estate firm. He was a deputy district attorney in Gill's office from 2017 to 2021. [1]
In his own words: Tribune questionnaire
Davis says the district attorney's office has no role in federal civil immigration enforcement and that he would sign certifications for cooperating victims under federal visa programs. He answered no when asked whether the county should cooperate with ICE beyond what the law requires. [1]
On data centers, Davis opposes a blanket ban, citing litigation risk, and supports conditional use permits, water and power impact studies, closed-loop cooling, noise and setback limits, and rules so residents do not subsidize a facility's power. On police charging decisions, he says that if the Legislature acts, it should set a firm deadline and require a public written explanation of every decision. [1]
Davis says the office does not track whether graduates of its alternative-to-incarceration programs reoffend, citing a 2025 legislative audit, and says he would track and publish those rates annually. [1]
Gill answered the same questionnaire. He also answered no on ICE cooperation, says the office's job is to prosecute violations of Utah law, and points to the mental health court, veterans court and pre-filing diversion program he says he created. The Tribune lists both candidates' answers side by side. [1]
