Work
The Tribune's questionnaire, citing the Forward Party website, describes Smith as a recovery coach and entrepreneur. [1]
In their own words: the Tribune questionnaire
Smith says both major parties have broken promises, ignored voters and courts and sought to consolidate power, and presents himself as not beholden to a party machine. On affordability he proposes making public transit the most convenient and affordable option on the Wasatch Front, including a two-thirds fare reduction, and a state public-private partnership to build affordable condos. [1]
On water he makes saving the Great Salt Lake a top priority, arguing hay and alfalfa use most diverted water, and would work with farmers to shift to water-saving crops. He would protect mental health services, parks and forests, citing roughly 20 years in the field. He answered For on Constitutional Amendment A and Against on Amendment B. Republican Ryan Mahoney did not respond to the questionnaire. [1]
Background
The campaign website says Smith grew up in Michigan, moved to Utah in 2007, attended the National Outdoor Leadership School in Wyoming, and has worked in mental health and evidence-based addiction treatment since 2009. Smith leads the outdoor program at an adult in-patient treatment program and co-owns a personal coaching company. [2]
Stated priorities
These are the candidate's own statements from the campaign website, not checked by The Utah Ledger. The site says folks "should be able to afford housing, food, health care, and education," calls restoring the Great Salt Lake to a healthy level Smith's top priority, and calls for infrastructure ready for the 2034 Winter Games. The site carries testimonials, including one from state Sen. Emily Buss, rather than a formal endorsement list. [2]
