Lehi residents will be able to have household hazardous waste picked up at their homes starting Dec. 1 after the City Council agreed to join a Waste Management trial program called At Your Door Special Collection, the Lehi Free Press reported. [1]
Waste Management government affairs representative Blake Leonelli told the paper the company has had three fires in its trucks over the past year, sparked when items such as propane containers, electronics, paint and garden chemicals are tossed in trash cans and crushed. Lehi and Roy are the two cities in the pilot, which will give the company data before any statewide expansion. [1]
Residents will be able to call or email to request a kit with instructions and a collection bag, and the service will be free to households that already have city garbage pickup, according to the report. Accepted items include household chemicals, motor oil, antifreeze, vehicle batteries, computers and other electronics, paint, fluorescent bulbs, mercury thermometers, fuels and solvents, sharps and pool chemicals. [1]
Tires, large appliances or those containing Freon, ammunition and explosives will not be accepted. The city is still setting up how residents will sign up and said more information will come in the next few months, the Free Press reported. [1]
