The national Volunteers of America was founded in New York City in 1896. A Utah affiliate was created in 1907, offering a free medical dispensary and an inexpensive hotel, and later added an employment agency, a thrift store, a convalescent camp and an emergency shelter before the program closed during the Great Depression. The Utah affiliate was re-established in 1986 as a locally operated 501(c)(3) nonprofit, starting with a detoxification center in Salt Lake City. Its timeline also records the Youth Resource Center opening in 2016 and the Geraldine E. King Women's Resource Center in 2019. [1]
