UTA was formed on March 3, 1970, when Sandy, Salt Lake City and Murray voted to create a transit district, and traces its roots to a 1953 merger of several bus companies. It is headquartered at 669 West 200 South in Salt Lake City and serves parts of six counties: Box Elder, Davis, Salt Lake, Tooele, Utah and Weber. Its network includes bus routes, bus rapid transit lines (MVX, UVX and OGX), three TRAX lines, the S-Line streetcar, FrontRunner between Ogden and Provo, on-demand microtransit, paratransit and vanpools. UTA reported about 40.4 million trips in 2025. The Midvalley Express bus rapid transit line opened on April 12, 2026, with electric buses, and construction began in 2026 to extend the S-Line from Fairmont Station to Highland Drive. A seven-member Transit Commission replaced the three-member Board of Trustees on July 1, 2026 under Senate Bill 197. Jay Fox is chief executive. [1]
