The school began on September 19, 1911, as the St. George Stake Academy. It was renamed Dixie Academy in 1913, Dixie Normal College in 1916, Dixie Junior College in 1923, Dixie College in 1970, Dixie State College in 2000 and Dixie State University in 2013 before becoming Utah Tech University on July 1, 2022. Fall 2022 enrollment was 12,556. [1] [2]

The renaming followed years of debate over the Dixie name, with the process starting in June 2020. A proposed name, Utah Polytechnic State University, drew negative community input, so the board recommended Utah Tech, and the Legislature approved it. The athletic teams are the Trailblazers, and the mascot is Brooks the Bison. [1]
