UDOT was formed on July 1, 1975, taking over from the State Road Commission of Utah, which was created in 1909. It is headquartered at the Calvin L. Rampton State Office Complex in Taylorsville, employs roughly 1,800 people and is led by executive director Carlos Braceras. The department works through four administrative regions, 10 functional groups and 88 maintenance stations. [1] [2]

Beyond maintaining about 5,900 miles of state highways, UDOT's responsibilities include aeronautics, paved trails, transit, rail, amusement ride safety, motor carriers and ports of entry. Its strategic goals are Zero Fatalities, Optimize Mobility and Preserve Infrastructure, and the independent Utah Transportation Commission sets project priorities. In May 2024 the state sent $95 million toward 18 trail projects as part of a statewide trail network plan. [1]
