The organization says it was founded in 1923 as the Travelers Aid Society to help stranded travelers. The Salt Lake Community Shelter and Resource Center opened at 210 South Rio Grande Street in November 1988 and was renamed The Road Home in October 2001. [1]

In 2007 it partnered with Shelter the Homeless to buy a former Holiday Inn at 999 South Main Street, which became the Palmer Court housing complex. The Rio Grande shelter closed in 2019. The timeline shows the organization moving from emergency shelter toward separate housing programs. [1]
