The Natural History Museum of Utah sits in the foothills of the University of Utah's Research Park campus above Salt Lake City. Its exhibitions rest on scientific collections of roughly 2 million objects, which the museum preserves for research, and it says its mission is to illuminate the natural world and the place of humans within it. [1]
Utah law established the museum in 1962 to care for specimens collected by university faculty, and it opened to the public in 1969 as the Utah Museum of Natural History in the George Thomas Building on the main campus. It moved into the Rio Tinto Center, designed by Ennead Architects, in November 2011 and took its current name. The museum calls itself the largest museum in the Intermountain West, a self-description rather than an independent ranking. [1]
