The institute opened in 1999 with a $100 million pledge from Jon Huntsman Sr., who has given more than $250 million of his own money. The National Cancer Institute awarded it Comprehensive Cancer Center status in 2015. A research building for children's and hereditary cancers, funded by a further $50 million gift announced in November 2013, opened in 2017. [1] [2]
Mary Beckerle led the institute from 2006 to 2025, and Bradley Cairns, PhD, became CEO on September 1, 2025. In 2017 the FCC fined Sinclair Broadcast Group $13.3 million for failing to label paid advertising for the institute as sponsored content. [1]
