Best Friends Animal Society

Best Friends says its founders began in February 1984, on snow-covered ground in Angel Canyon. Before that they had run a small sanctuary at a ranch about 30 miles west of Prescott, Arizona. By June 1984 they had trailers, a bunkhouse and dog runs in place, and the group and about 200 animals moved to Kanab. All of this is the organization's own account. [1]

Its work extends beyond the sanctuary. Its network includes public and private shelters, rescue groups and spay/neuter organizations, and partners can get program resources, data insights, mentorship and sometimes grant eligibility. Membership is free but doesn't mean Best Friends owns or runs a partner's shelter. [2]
