Naples council moves the 2000 East road project into final design with sidewalks on both sides

October 8, 2026, 7:30 p.m. · Naples City Office, 1420 East 2850 South

At its Oct. 8 meeting the Naples City Council voted to enter final design on the 2000 East road project with sidewalk on the west side and on the east side, subject to negotiating with two affected property owners. The project budget is about $1.8 million before the roughly $100,000 sidewalk section; skipping the existing east-side sidewalk would save about $61,000. Council Member Nate Zilles also outlined a state Division of Wildlife Resources proposal for two fishing ponds at the Nature Park, with a $150 water right application. Council Member Kenneth Reynolds was absent.

Agenda, item by item

  1. Item 2000 East · Roads and utilities

Final design for the 2000 East project

    Approved · 5-0 · 2000 East

UDOT prefers the city fill the gap in the west-side sidewalk. Staff said the east-side options would add or save tens of thousands of dollars, and that no final figure is possible until the council chooses. Council Member Zilles moved to enter final design with sidewalk on both sides, understanding the design can change in negotiations with the two affected families, who had said they were not interested in sidewalk in front of their homes.

Moved by Council Member Zilles, seconded by Council Member Morton. Vote: All voting aye

  2. Item Ponds · Parks

Fishing ponds at the Nature Park (water right application)

    Discussed

Zilles reported meeting with the Division of Water Rights on filing for a nearby spring to supply two ponds that need about 4.06 acre-feet a year to offset evaporation, with 9.3 and 9.93 acre-feet to fill them. The application fee is $150, within administrative approval; the mayor asked the Division of Wildlife Resources to return and Morton to report on the recreation district's response. A county commissioner offered to help arrange a one-time fill.
