Background

Terry Whitehat is a Democratic candidate for San Juan County Commission District 2 and a member of the Navajo Mountain community. His public-service background includes social work and community organizing. In 2016, he was among Navajo community members who joined a lawsuit challenging the county’s move to mail-focused elections and reduced in-person polling access. His concerns included access to interpretation and the travel required for residents of remote communities. A 2020 report also described his work introducing a congressional candidate to Navajo Mountain residents and local infrastructure needs.
