Resignation and withdrawal from the 2026 race

The Salt Lake Tribune reported on Sept. 14, 2026 that Kerry, a Republican first elected in 2022, announced on his Facebook page on Sept. 11 that he would resign his seat and withdraw his reelection bid, effective that Monday. He said the decision was driven by family circumstances, including the need to move from Weber County to Utah County to care for his mother. [2]

District 2 covers parts of Weber County, including Ogden and Eden. The Tribune notes that state board members and candidates must live in the districts they represent, so the move made Kerry ineligible to keep the seat or run again. The only other candidate certified for the ballot is Democrat Kacee Weaver, director of Maria Montessori Academy in North Ogden. [2]

Under the state law the Tribune describes, a party can replace a withdrawn candidate only before the lieutenant governor certifies the ballot, which happened Aug. 28. The governor must appoint a temporary replacement to finish the term, which ends in January, from three nominees chosen by the Utah Republican Party's central committee. [2]
