H.B. 92: Presidential Electors Amendments

2026 General Session · Originating chamber: House

Saved official records and Ledger coverage. The outcome below is from the Legislature’s own step list.

What the bill does

Did not pass both chambers; the bill was filed on March 6, 2026.

It would have changed how Utah awards presidential electors, giving one electoral vote to the winner in each congressional district and two to the statewide winner. It never reached a floor vote: a committee sent it back to the Rules Committee, and it was filed on March 6, 2026.

This bill modifies provisions governing the distribution of electoral votes.

  • In an election for president and vice president of the United States: allocates one electoral vote for the presidential and vice presidential candidates who receive the highest number of votes in a Congressional district; allocates two electoral votes for the presidential and vice presidential candidates who receive the highest number of statewide votes; and requires a registered political party, or an unaffiliated candidate or a write-in candidate for president of the United States, to notify the lieutenant governor if a vacancy occurs in the office of a presidential elect
  • Standardizes the deadlines to file a declaration of candidacy for the office of vice president of the United States and to choose presidential electors
  • Makes technical and conforming changes

The description and list come from the bill's own long title as recorded by the Legislature; the paragraph above is the Ledger’s summary. Read the official bill. The Ledger takes no position on it.
