As the season's first freeze nears, plumbing professionals are urging homeowners to take a few steps to keep pipes from freezing and bursting, FOX 13 News Utah reported. [1]

Troy Neerings, owner of Neerings Plumbing Heating Air & Electric, said it is important to take garden hoses off outdoor spigots so they can drain. Nicholas Ball, a plumbing service manager at Whipple Service Champions in West Valley City, said a hose left on can cause water to freeze and the metal to burst. [1]

Ball also advised attaching skirting fully around manufactured homes, putting pipe insulation and heat tape on exposed exterior pipes, sealing window wells and closing crawl space vents. He said wind getting into a home is often a bigger cause of frozen pipes than cold alone. [1]

Ball said homeowners should know where their main shutoff is inside the home and confirm they have one. The valve is often in a basement, garage or crawl space, or near where the water line enters the home, he said. [1]
