Solitude Mountain Resort

Solitude lives up to its name on most weekdays: a quieter Cottonwood resort with a small European-style village, the steep backside of Honeycomb Canyon and a Nordic center at Silver Lake.

Solitude sits a few miles below Brighton in Big Cottonwood Canyon and gets the same storms with noticeably shorter lift lines. The front side is groomed cruisers and gentle glades that suit intermediates. The real draw for strong skiers is Honeycomb Canyon on the back side, a long gully of chutes, cliffs and trees that funnels down to a single return lift.

The Moonbeam base and the small village at the Inn at Solitude give the resort a calm, walkable feel, and the Solitude Nordic Center at Silver Lake grooms classic and skate tracks and snowshoe trails in a high meadow ringed by peaks. Solitude is the one Utah mountain where the full Ikon Pass gives unlimited days.

Good to know

  • Solitude requires parking reservations for early arrivals in winter, usually before late morning. Reservations open in the fall; check the resort’s parking page before you go.
  • UTA ski buses serve Solitude and Brighton from the valley and are free for Ikon and many local passholders.
  • Big Cottonwood’s traction-device rules apply in storms. Rental cars without snow tires can be turned around at the canyon mouth.
  • Honeycomb Canyon terrain opens late on storm days while patrol does avalanche work. Lap the front side until it opens.
